Mute Video

Quick answer
To mute a video, you remove its audio track and keep the picture — the fastest edit there is, because the video stream is copied untouched. This tool does it in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm using `-c:v copy -an`, so there is no re-encode, no quality loss and no upload. A one-time ~10 MB engine loads on first use, but muting itself is near-instant even on longer clips.
Step by step
How to mute video
- 01
Load your video
Drop your clip in. The ~10 MB engine downloads once on first use and stays cached.
- 02
Confirm mute
The tool is set to strip the audio track and copy the video stream as-is — no options to fiddle with, nothing to degrade.
- 03
Export the silent video
Download the muted file. Because the picture is stream-copied, it finishes almost instantly and looks identical to the source.
In depth
How can muting be instant and lossless?
Removing audio does not require re-encoding the picture. The tool tells ffmpeg to copy the video stream (-c:v copy) and drop the audio (-an). Copying means the already-encoded video frames are lifted from the source and written into the new file byte-for-byte — no decode, no re-encode, so no quality is lost and the job finishes in seconds even on a long clip. All that changes is the audio track, which simply is not written to the output.
| Stream | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Video | Copied (-c:v copy) | Identical to source, instant |
| Audio | Dropped (-an) | Removed entirely |
| Container | Rewritten | Same format, smaller by the audio size |
When do you want to mute a video?
- Killing background noise, wind or chatter you do not want shared.
- Removing copyrighted music before uploading to a platform that would flag it.
- Stripping audio from a screen recording that captured private conversation.
- Preparing silent B-roll to drop under a voice-over in an editor.
- Shrinking a file slightly by dropping the audio track you were never going to use.
If you want to *keep* the sound as a separate file before muting — to reuse it, or to edit it on its own — extract the audio as an MP3 first, then mute the video. That way you have both the silent clip and the soundtrack.
Does the browser limit apply here?
Far less than for the re-encoding tools. Because muting is a stream copy, the single-threaded engine barely has to work — there is no per-frame math — so it handles longer files comfortably and quickly. The one real limit is memory: the whole file is loaded into the tab, so a multi-gigabyte source can still run the browser out of room. For ordinary clips, muting is effortless.
Is my video uploaded to mute it?
No. The mute runs in your browser through ffmpeg.wasm — the file is processed in memory and handed back as a download, never sent to a server. Verify it in DevTools → Network: no upload request appears, and the tool works offline once loaded. That is exactly what you want when the reason you are muting is that the audio was private.

Processed locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded. You can verify it yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and use the tool — no upload request is ever made.

Frequently asked questions
01Does muting a video reduce its quality?
No. The video stream is copied without re-encoding, so the picture is bit-for-bit identical to the source. Only the audio track is removed.
02How do I remove the sound from a video?
Load the clip and export — the tool copies the video stream and drops the audio with `-an`. You get a silent version of the same file, almost instantly.
03Is muting faster than other edits?
Yes, by a wide margin. It is a stream copy with no encoding, so it finishes in seconds even on long clips, unlike compression or resizing which re-encode every frame.
04Can I get the audio back after muting?
Not from the muted file — the audio is gone. Extract the audio to an MP3 before muting if you want to keep a copy of the soundtrack.
05Does muting make the file smaller?
Slightly, by the size of the audio track it removes. It is not a compression tool, though — for a real size cut, compress or resize the video.
06What format does the muted video come out as?
The same container and video codec as the source, since the picture is stream-copied. An MP4 in is an MP4 out, unchanged apart from the missing audio.
07Is muting done on my device?
Yes, entirely in your browser via ffmpeg.wasm. Nothing is uploaded — you can confirm there is no network request in your developer tools.
