Quick answer
To convert WebM to MP4 this tool re-encodes the VP8/VP9 video into H.264 and wraps it in an MP4 container that plays on essentially everything — iOS, Windows apps, editors and TVs that flatly refuse WebM. It runs entirely in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm, so nothing is uploaded. The engine is a one-time ~10 MB download; because it is single-threaded, short clips convert fastest.
Step by step
How to webm to mp4 converter
- 01
Add your WebM
Drag a .webm file onto the drop zone or browse for it. The tool reads its VP8/VP9 video and Vorbis/Opus audio directly.
- 02
Convert to MP4
The engine re-encodes the picture to H.264 and the audio to AAC, then muxes them into a standard .mp4.
- 03
Download the MP4
Save the finished .mp4 — it now opens in the apps, editors and devices that would not touch the WebM.
In depth
Why convert WebM to MP4?
WebM is great inside a browser and awkward almost everywhere else. Download a clip from a web page and you often get a .webm your phone gallery will not preview, your video editor will not import, and iOS will not accept through a share sheet. MP4 with H.264 is the format the rest of the world actually agrees on. Converting to it trades WebM’s open format and small size for the thing you probably need more right now: a file that just opens, on any app or device you hand it to.
| Destination | Accepts WebM? | Accepts MP4/H.264? |
|---|---|---|
Browser <video> | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone / iOS apps | Rarely | Yes |
| Windows apps & Media Player | Sometimes | Yes |
| Video editors (Premiere, etc.) | Often no | Yes |
| Smart TVs / set-top boxes | Rarely | Yes |
| Social uploads | Inconsistent | Yes |
Does converting WebM to MP4 hurt quality?
It is a real re-encode — VP9 or VP8 has to be decoded and the picture recompressed as H.264 — so it is technically generation-lossy. In practice, at a matching bitrate the result is visually indistinguishable from the source; you are unlikely to see any difference on a phone or laptop screen. What does add up is repeated round-trips, so avoid converting the same clip back and forth between formats. One clean WebM→MP4 pass is nothing to worry about.
How long does it take, and is there a size limit?
The engine is ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and runs single-threaded, so it is slower than the desktop ffmpeg that spreads work across every core and the GPU. H.264 encoding is a bit lighter than VP9, so WebM→MP4 is often quicker than the reverse, but a few minutes of HD is still a few minutes of work. Because the entire file is held in browser memory, very large or very long WebMs can exhaust the tab. If your source is big, compress it or trim it before converting.
Is my WebM uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and your file never leaves the device — there is not even an upload step to wait on. Verify it yourself in DevTools → Network: aside from the one-time engine download, nothing carries your video out. Confidential recordings stay confidential.

Frequently asked questions
01Why will not my WebM play on my iPhone or in my editor?
Many Apple apps, iOS share sheets and video editors do not support the VP8/VP9 codecs WebM uses. Converting to MP4 with H.264 gives you a file those apps accept.
02Does WebM to MP4 lose quality?
It is a re-encode, so technically yes, but at a matching bitrate the difference is not visible in normal viewing. Just avoid converting the same clip back and forth repeatedly.
03Is the MP4 bigger than the WebM?
Often slightly, because H.264 is generally less efficient than VP9. If size matters, run the MP4 through the compressor afterwards to bring it back down.
04Will the converted MP4 play on Windows?
Yes. MP4 with H.264 plays in Windows Media Player, the Photos app, browsers and virtually every other Windows video app without extra codecs.
05How long does the conversion take?
A short clip is quick; a few minutes of HD takes a few minutes because the engine runs single-threaded in the browser. It has no GPU or multi-core acceleration like a desktop encoder.
06Can I convert a long WebM recording?
You can, but the whole file processes in browser memory, so very long or large files may run the tab out of RAM. Trim or compress a long recording first for a smoother conversion.
07Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. All processing is local to your browser. Check the Network tab of your developer tools to confirm nothing is uploaded.
